Just a handful of days before the 2020 high school golf season officially kicks off, this year’s Ohio Girls Golf Foundation (OGGF) Showcase featuring LPGA Tour Professional Barb Mucha will be an ideal warm-up to the competitive season ahead.
Set for Monday, July 27, at Avon Oaks Country Club in Avon, girls who play in this year’s event will enjoy a series of specially produced clinics by area golf professionals prior to the event, available online due to COVID-19 social distancing restrictions.
Open to high school girls, including incoming freshmen and graduated seniors, the 18-hole team and individual event will take place with staggered tee times and includes breakfast and lunch. Awards for individual low gross and best team will be mailed to the winners.
“The Showcase has become the premier kickoff event to the girls’ high school golf fall season,” says LPGA Professional Barb Mucha. “Golfers of all abilities come here to learn, compete and succeed.
For Parma Heights native Mucha, who had to play on the boys’ high school golf team because there was no girls’ team, headlining the OGGF Showcase has become an annual tradition for the past 25 years. After playing at Michigan State University, she went on to enjoy a long and distinguished career with the LPGA (1987-2007) including five major wins. But her consistency is even more impressive than her victories. She posted top 10 finishes in 115 of the 321 LPGA tournaments she played in. She has carded six wins on the Futures Tour, and one win on the Legends Tour, as well as represented the United States on winning Handa Cup teams in 2014 and 2015. In 2011, Mucha was inducted into the Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame.
Since the formation of the Ohio Girls Golf Foundation in 1994, the number of girls’ high school golf teams in the state has grown from zero to more than 200.
The Foundation’s mission is to encourage, sponsor and support the game of golf for girls by providing college scholarships, golf training programs and financial assistance.
