Start to finish, Sunday at Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna was wet. The rains came early to the second round of the 95th Northeast Ohio Amateur Championship, slowed then restarted all day, and eventually came down heavy enough that play had to be suspended for standing water in many locations.
Northern Ohio Golf Association Tournament Director Sean Croell called for a suspension of play at 1:54 p.m. on Sunday, with some afternoon wave players still waiting to start their round. Even under second-round lift, clean, and place rules, the amount of water on the fairways and greens at Windmill Lakes made the course unplayable.
The rain slowed enough for the NOGA staff to evaluate the grounds at 3 p.m., and it was determined that play could resume at 6 p.m. should no more rain fall after that time.
The rain held off, and play resumed. But that late restart time made it clear that many players in Sunday’s afternoon wave would not finish their round.
With the weather forecast for Monday showing an even higher percentage of rain and even some significant thunderstorms, the call was made to reduce the event to 36 holes with a Monday morning finish starting at 7:30 a.m.
