The 79th season of the Northern Ohio Section of the Professional Golfers Association has approached the back nine. Five big events — all regarded as part of the Section’s 14 “majors” — remain on the schedule, and they start this Thursday, September 25th.
The events are:
20th Assistants Cup Matches
When: September 25–26
Where: Sand Ridge Golf Club, Chardon, OH
The East-West Assistants Cup Matches return for the 20th playing at Sand Ridge Golf Club. Teams are divided geographically, with the East captained by Mark Sierak and Robb Schulze and the West captained by Eric Morgan. The field features the top eight “A-Level” Assistants and the top eight “B-Level” Associates on their respective points lists, with Player of the Year points taken through the Assistants Championship. Once the 16 players were finalized, the dividing line between East and West was drawn, placing the eight most western participants against the eight most eastern.
24th Mitchell-Haskell Tour Championship
When: September 29-30
Where: The Country Club, Pepper Pike
Named after former Country Club Head Professional Joe Mitchell and Coburn Haskell, inventor of the modern day golf ball and long-time Country member, this is the final stroke-play event of the season. It is 36 holes with Regular and Senior Divisions and is open only to former Mitchell-Haskell winners, former Denny Shute Match Play Champions, former winners of the NOPGA Professional (Section) Championship, the top 30 players on the season-long Rolex Points List, the top 15 players on the Seniors Points List and the top six players on the Associates Points List. Defending champions: Blake Sattler (Regular Division); Gary Rusnak (Senior Division).
29th Ohio Cup Matches
When: October 6-8
Where: Wedgewood Golf & Country Club, Powell, Ohio
With the 45th playing of the Ryder Cup fresh in our memories, the NOPGA and its counterparts from the Southern Ohio PGA meet in an event patterned after the famed bi-annual international team event. Teams are comprised off the respective Section Ohio Cup Points Lists and include 16 players, 10 on the Regular side and six Seniors. Competition is entirely Match Play in Fourball (aka Bestball), Foursomes (aka Alternate Shot) and Singles. Defending champion: The NOPGA won last year at Westbrook CC, 17-15, and leads the series, 17-11.
51st Denny Shute Match Play Championship
When: October 13-15
Where: Portage Country Club, Akron
Named after the Cleveland native and long-time Portage CC Head Professional who obtained international stardom and World Golf Hall-of-Fame status with victories in the 1933 (British) Open Championship and the 1936 and 1937 PGA Championship, the event is conducted in three divisions: Regular, Senior and Associates. It is one of the Section’s most prestigious events to win. Defending champions: Adam Lewicki (Regular Division), Tom Atchison (Senior Division), Sean McGuire (Associate Division).
3rd Junior Ohio Cup Matches
