With only three weeks left in the season, the front-runners are running neck and neck as they head to the finish with the Thompson Cup on the line.
The venue was Legend Lakes Country Club on Thursday, and six of the season’s top players joined in on the skin-winning action.
The final event of the 2012 Chippewa Scratch League season was played on Monday under clear skies, breezy conditions, and on a golf course that was in great shape with incredibly smooth and fast greens.
While no last minute heroics by the team of Rick Bryson and Ryan Maxwell supplanted Dave Oates and Sam Spino (pictured at the right) from winning the 2012 League Standings (congratulations to Dave and Sam!), that didn’t stop two teams from cleaning up on the evening and greatly improving their season’s position.
The Greater Cleveland Skins teed off on the River Nine at Fowlers Mill Golf Course in Chesterland on the last Thursday of the summer, and the weather was ideal.
But Mark Borlin seemed to enjoy the evening more than others.
The finish to the 2012 season of the Lake Erie Golf Tour was a deathly quiet one: the last three scheduled dates on the tournament calendar were never played, including last Friday’s Tour Championship.
That final event, which was promoted as having a $1,000 guaranteed first place prize and was to be played at Chippewa Golf Club in Doylestown, did not happen as scheduled. The LEGT website has not been updated past a call for entries for that final event, either.
Many of the hole locations on the back nine at Chippewa were set to ‘championship’ spots on Monday, so there were plenty of run-offs and chip-backs in the already difficult aggregate stroke play format (combined scores of two players).
Included in that setup was the par-3 12th hole, with the hole cut to the right side and ‘in the slot’, making it easy to putt off the green.
But the winners of Week 17’s play skipped all that nonsense: they both made birdie there for an amazing aggregate score of 4 on the hole, on their way to a two-shot victory and a skin.
And with that effort, the team of Rick Bryson and Ryan Maxwell are making a last-minute run at overtaking the season-long leaders.
The Greater Cleveland Skins Game will play at Fowlers Mill Golf Course in Chesterland this coming Thursday, September 20 instead of at Erie Shores as originally scheduled, as the Madison course is aerifying their greens this week. Play will begin at Fowlers Mill at 4:30p on Thursday.
