Ben Cors played his final 10 holes at 4-under par to win the 103rd Metropolitan Championship by two strokes.
A second round 62 by Cors broke the competitive course record at Windy Knoll Golf Club just one day after tying the previous course record of 63. The first two rounds put Cors on track to win the event with a record-breaking 23-under par — the lowest in MVG Metropolitan history by four shots.
After over three hours of weather delays both at 11:36 a.m. and 1:49 p.m., the final round proved to be quite the mental test for competitors. Ben Cors remained steady all day, following a double bogey on the 8th with five birdies to finish with a 66. Those last five birdies were nothing new for Cors, as he recorded 29 birdies for the week.
Brody Simms began the day tied for fourth, three strokes back from first. An impressive back nine with four birdies and only one bogey would vault Simms up the leaderboard to solo second.
Ian Asch, T.J. Kreusch, and Luke Metzger all tied for third place, with each player carding at least three birdies in their final nine holes.
With Cors’ victory, he earned an exemption into the U.S. Amateur Championship hosted by The Olympic Club in San Francisco on August 11-17. The top three finishers received an exemption from local qualifying for next year’s U.S. Amateur.
