Barberton’s Nolan Haynes raced out to a Saturday afternoon 64 at Windmill Lakes Golf Club, then plodded his way through a rainy Sunday morning 69 to earn a two shot victory in the 95th Northeast Ohio Amateur Championship.
Sunday’s morning wave completed their second round as scheduled in a persistent yet playable rain. Tournament leader Haynes, playing at his college home course as a member of the Kent State Golden Flashes men’s team, set the number to beat at 7-under par 133. Then he went home and watch NOGA Live Scoring to see if anyone might catch him before the Monday finale.
But the Monday finale didn’t happen as planned.
Sunday afternoon in Ravenna brought enough rain that second round play was suspended at 1:54 p.m. because of standing water. When it was determined that the earliest play could resume was 6 p.m. on Sunday, and with a forecast of heavy rain and thunderstorms a near-certainty for 4-5 hours on Monday morning, the Northern Ohio Golf Association Tournament Staff decided to shorten the championship to 36 holes. The goal: get the afternoon wave around to complete 36 holes before the Monday weather unleashed.
The call was perfectly correct.
Second round play was called for darkness at 8:45 p.m. on Sunday night, with the last groups still having eight holes left to complete on Monday morning. Play began with beautiful weather at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, competitors finished up their second round, then the skies opened up over Windmill Lakes at 10 a.m., just as forecasted.
Over that late Sunday into early Monday slog, three players had a chance to catch Haynes.

Rocky River’s Julian Dugan shot 66 on Saturday to trail Haynes by two heading into Sunday. But Dugan had one of the late starting times, so a good chunk of his round was played Monday morning. Dugan traded two birdies and two bogeys on his front nine, made birdie at 12 to get to 1-under, but couldn’t mount a charge to close. He finished with bogeys on 16 and 17 and shot 71 to finish solo fourth at 3-under par 137.
Defending champion Vaughn Snyder of Canton and Ajay Morris from Cortland both shot 67 on Saturday, and both played early in the afternoon wave on Sunday looking to chase down Haynes. Both players finished their rounds late on Sunday night.

Morris started on the first tee on Sunday afternoon and immediately caught fire, making birdies at three of his first four holes. He traded bogey and birdie on five and six, but then made a tough bogey at the ninth for a 2-under par 33 front side. A birdie at the 11th pushed Morris back in the right direction, but a bogey at 14 killed the momentum. A birdie at 17 and another bogey at 18 gave him a Sunday round of 68, leaving him at 5-under par 135, two shots behind Haynes and a solo second place finish.

Snyder started on the tenth at the same time as Morris, but his first nine holes didn’t bring the same fire. Snyder played his first six holes 1-over par, making bogey at the par-3 12th. Birdies at 16 and 17 allowed Snyder to turn at 1-under par 34, but a bogey at the first hole pushed him back to even par on the day. Snyder went bogey-birdie-bogey-birdie from four through seven, and made a birdie at the ninth to finish 1-under par on Sunday, at 136 total. That 4-under par total score was good enough to win the Mid-Amateur Division for players age 25+ by six shots over Brian Smith of Amherst.

In the Senior Division, Fairlawn’s Howard Clendenin posted his second consecutive even par round of 70 early on Sunday morning, then watched as first round leader Brad Steven of Concord (Saturday 68) and Doug Hanzel of Savannah, GA (Saturday 69) both shot 74 on Sunday to finish behind Clendenin.
Clendenin made three bogeys and birdies on Saturday then two of each on Sunday, capping a steady performance that won by two. Steven made a double bogey each day to hurt his cause, while the 68-year-old Hanzel made five rainy Sunday bogeys against just one birdie.
Kudos to the Grounds Staff at Windmill Lakes for a competition-ready golf course — including having the greens cut on Monday morning with a 7:30 a.m. start time! — and kudos to the NOGA Tournament Staff for planning around an extremely difficult weather and water situation.
