Windham’s Rob Schustrich started Saturday’s second round at the 2025 Senior Summit County Amateur at Good Park as hot as a player can start. Schustrich began three shots behind the first-round leader Ron Chapman of Olmsted Township, but after making three birdies in the first four holes — boom boom boom — the pair was tied.
Then Schustrich simply ground down Chapman until the last.
Chapman shot a blistering first-round score of 5-under par 66 on Friday. He made 10 straight pars to open his Saturday. When he finally made birdie at the par-5 second hole (the leaders at the two Summit County Ams start the second round off the 10th tee), he took a one shot lead at 6-under par.
That birdie put Chapman in front of Schustrich by one, as Rob made nothing but pars after his run of three opening birdies.
Chapman made bogey on the par-5 fifth, his first bogey of the tournament, to fall back to square with Schustrich.
Both players traded pars on six, seven, and eight. They came to the par-three ninth tee, a tough 200-yarder, tied at 5-under par for the tournament.
Schustrich hit a solid shot that went over the flag but just a bit long, in the rough behind the green. Chapman pulled his tee shot left, caught the tree, and dropped down about 30 yards short-left.
Chapman hit his pitch shot moderately well, finishing 15 feet below the hole. Schustrich chose to putt from the rough above the hole, and almost did the unthinkable…
…nearly holing out from off the green for the outright win. The ball finished four feet below the hole.
Chapman made a good stroke to save his par, but his putt went a bit left, leaving him to suffer only his second bogey of the tournament.
Then to the surprise of almost no one looking on, Schustrich rolled home his par putt for the victory, gave a small fist pump, then pointed to the sky in recognition of a recent family loss.
Schustrich made only one bogey in 36 holes in the 2025 Senior Summit County Am. With the win, he has collected five separate trophies in this championship. So many trophies, in fact, that Tournament Director Larry Zimmerman joked during the presentation that he stopped giving clock trophies to Schustrich after the third one and changed to plaques because more clocks just seemed odd.
Brecksville’s Allen Freeman finished solo third three shots behind Chapman, and Bolivar’s Kurt Peterson closed with a Saturday 68 to finish solo fourth.
Chapman posted the low total score in the 50-59 Age Division, Schustrich topped the 60-69 Division, and Hudson’s Mike Cassell finished atop the 70+ group. Gift certificate payouts are made by age division, and will be available at the Foxy Golf near Turkeyfoot after Wednesday.
A simple birdie netted a big reward for Hudson’s Mark Guadagni on Saturday. Guadagni made birdie on the par-4 third hole, a straight-forward 365-yarder with the pin set dead in the middle of the green. When no one matched that simple birdie, Mark collected the only skin of the day worth a tidy $1,020. The golf gods smiled.
A heart-felt thank you to Larry Zimmerman, Sean Devany, and the Good Park staff for running the two Summit County Amateur events; the players are truly grateful for their efforts.
