A gorgeous two days of golf weather and the well-conditioned greens of Ohio Prestwick Country Club made for an enjoyable 91st edition of the Stark County Amateur Championship.
Akron’s Kyle Smith, a sophomore golfer at Xavier in Cincinnati, took a commanding lead after Saturday’s 6-under par 66 and was able to coast to a four shot victory by posting a 2-under par 70 on Sunday.
Canfield’s Ryan Sam, a senior at Youngstown State, finished in second place at 4-under par 140. Sam posted the low Sunday round of 69.
Caden Scarbrough of North Canton and Lucas Liberatore from Fairview Park finished tied for third place at 3-under par.
Howard Clendenin of Fairlawn defended his Senior Stark County Am 50-59 title, backing up his first-round 69 with a Sunday 71. His 4-under par total gave him a two shot victory over Canton’s David Oates.
2023 champion Tom Laubacher of Aurora put together a pair of even par 72 rounds to outlast Canton’s Jeff Semple by two shots, claiming his second win in the Senior 60-69 Division.
Jim Herchek of Chagrin Falls earned a comeback victory, posting a 73 on Sunday to win by three shots over Paul Trenta of Hartville and first-round leader Fred Miller of Aurora.
Emily Liptak of Akron earned a blowout victory in the Women’s Stark County Amateur, shooting 72-77 to win by 11.
The Senior Women’s Championship ended in a tie, as Gail Hackett of Canton and Alison Cress of Jupiter, FL both shot 163.
