FINAL RESULTS: 2025 Summit County Amateur Championship

Barberton’s Nolan Haynes hung around par, and hung around par, and hung around par, then flipped a switch and blew away the field at the 50th Summit County Amateur Championship at Good Park Golf Course in Akron.

Haynes shot an even par 71 on Saturday, but in an uncharacteristic way: three-under par with two holes to play, he finished bogey-double on 17 and 18 to come back to par.

Then on Sunday, the Kent State golfer played his first nine holes — the back side at Good Park — in one-under par, again giving shots back in making bogey on the 18th. Hanging around par.

But after the turn, Haynes found something: he made five birdies in the first seven holes on Good Park’s front nine. He went from down by one shot to up by five shots in short order. A bogey at his last, the long par-3 ninth hole, was wholly inconsequential as the championship was clearly in hand.

Ryan Sam
Ryan Sam

Youngstown State golfer Ryan Sam of Canfield maintained his first round co-lead through the first half of the day, starting at 3-under par and turning his first nine holes at even to remain there. When Sam birdied the par-5 second to reach 4-under par total, he was still one ahead of Haynes, who had just started gearing up with birdies at his first two holes after the turn.

But from the third tee on, the leaders’ scoring paths diverged: Sam made four bogeys in five holes from the third through the seventh, while Haynes made two pars then three straight birdies at 5-6-7.

Saturday’s other first-round co-leader, 2021 Summit County Am champ Vaughn Snyder of Canton, dashed his chances early on Sunday with four bogeys in his opening nine holes.

Justin Atkinson
Justin Atkinson

Youngstown State golfer and former NEO Am champ Justin Atkinson of Brookfield started Sunday alone in third place and finished alone in second place, overcoming a double-bogey at his first hole to shoot 72 on the day. Atkinson finished as the only other player in the field besides Haynes with an under par total, at 1-under 141.

Snyder and Sam finished T3 at even par for the tournament, while Canton’s Dan Mosher fought his way to a Sunday 73 and a 1-over par fifth place finish.

Reigning Cleveland Amateur champ Luke Liberatore posted the only other under-par round on the day besides Haynes’ scorcher, shooting 1-under 70 to finish in a big group at T6.

The hole of the day belonged to Matt Warren, albeit a fairly unassuming one. His birdie putt, holed with authority up the big slope on the back of the 18th green, held up as the only skin won on Sunday, good for a tidy $1,150 payday.

Merchandise gift cards for Foxy Golf in Akron will be available after Wednesday in the amounts listed along side the scores below.
