Heading into this year’s edition of the Zoar Memorial, Canton’s Vaughn Snyder was the three-time defending champion, and true to form was tied for the first-round lead after a Saturday 68.
But Snyder a rough day on Sunday, leading to a different repeat champion.
Eric Crone of Dover won his second Zoar Memorial title, and he did so in a playoff for the second time.
Crone, Brian Myers of Wadsworth and David Oates from Canton all finished the 36-hole competition at 4-under par 140.
Crone lead most of Sunday thanks to six birdies in his final round. But on the 13th hole, Crone hit his tee shot to around 25 feet and 4-putted for double bogey, his second double of the day. But he bounced back, making his final birdies on 14 and 17.
After Crone’s miscue, Myers had a taken the lead with birdies at 12, 14 and 16, and had a chance to win outright with par on the 18 hole. But he hit a bad drive left and played a safe shot from the left rough to the right side of the green on 18. With a back left hole position, he faced a long, difficult putt and could not get down in two. He finished with the Sunday low score of 68.
Oates played solidly in the final round as well, posting a Sunday 69. He made six birdies against three bogeys.
Crone ended up with the victory on the second playoff hole.
Shaun Kloetzer of Fairlawn made a hole-in-one at the challenging par-4 fourth hole on Sunday for the shot of the day.
