It doesn’t matter that Northeast Ohio has an abundance of parks, parklands, and green space. It seems that cities, counties and park systems just can’t help themselves when it comes to expanding their holdings.
And lately, golf courses seem to be a ripe target for public acquisition.
Many times, the rational for this expansion is no more than ‘adding to their collection’. For example, see this latest story on the Summit County Metroparks desire to add to their park system by buying Valley View Golf Course in Akron.
No one should blame the owners of golf course properties from taking advantage of a windfall buyout to get them out of a business model that has been consistently declining. But at what point do the people who financially support these agencies tell them to stop wasting money grabbing more land?
