JIM TRESSEL ADDRESSES VETERANS AT LUNCHEON
JACKSON TOWNSHIP: A five-player team headed by Quail Hollow Director of Player Development, Kevin Sullivan, PGA won the second Northern Ohio PGA Hope Cup on Wednesday at Glenmoor Country Club.
The event was a day of celebration for 60 veterans of our Armed Services, who made up 15 teams and were paired with members of the Northern Ohio Section of the Professional Golfers Association who are PGA HOPE trained in a 9-hole scramble that was decided by a shootout between three teams.
PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) is a national program that introduces golf to veterans to help enhance their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being.
Only the veterans participated in the shootout after the 15 teams were split into two groups and played a scramble on Glenmoor’s two nines. The top teams from both nines advanced to the shootout, a 57-yard shot to Glenmoor’s 18th green.
The team from PGA HOPE: Elyria, captained by Valley of the Eagles professional Barry Friedman, PGA, posted a 6-under 30 on the front nine and PGA HOPE: Mentor and PGA HOPE: Chagrin Falls-Men, captained by Matthew Creech, PGA, won the back nine at 5-under 31.
All three advanced to the shootout, which PGA HOPE: Mentor won when Mentor resident and Army veteran Tom Brown knocked his shot to three feet. Navy veteran and Novelty resident Jim Morrison made a 30-foot birdie putt on the final hole to get his team into the shootout and Chardon resident Jason Wallingford and Painesville Township’s Rob Sutton also made key contributions.
Former Ohio State coach and former president of Youngstown State University, Jim Tressel, was the guest speaker and delivered a heartfelt and enlightening talk to the crowd during a question and answer session with television personality and golf course owner Jimmy Hanlin, PGA about football, golf, heart, determination and dedication.
