Youngstown Country Club assistant professional Jon Jones shot a 4-under 68 on Monday to take the first-round lead in the 75th Northern Ohio PGA Professional Championship at Tippecanoe Country Club.
Jones, in his 25th year at YCC, got hot over a stretch of eight holes in which he made an eagle and four birdies to get to four-under and sole possession of the lead heading into Tuesday’s second round.
Five-time champion Rob Moss, head professional at the Pepper Pike Club, is alone in second place at two-under 70 (35-35). Five others are three shots back and 2019 champion Mike Stone (34-38=72) is alone in eighth place.
Only eight players in the 56-player field were able to shoot par or better.
Tannenhauf Golf Club head professional Mary Suitca continued her dominance in the Women’s Section Championship, shooting an opening 79 for a 3-shot lead over Alliance Country Club assistant Melissa Greene. Suitca went 39-40 and will attempt to win this event for the fourth time in five years in Tuesday’s final round.
Toledo Country Club Head Professional and 2020 champion Jaysen Hansen (36-35), Optimus Golf owner Mark Sierak (36-35), GolfTec-Stonebrook instructor Jared Toom (35-36), 1899-Indoor Golf Managing Partner Scott Pollack (36-35) and Erie Shores Head Professional Nick Gustin (35-36) are tied at one-under 71.
Jones, 58, kicked his round into high gear with an eagle on the 508-yard seventh hole and followed with the first of four birdies on the 431-yard eighth. A bogey on the 11th dropped him to one0undere but he reeled off three consecutive birdies on hols 12 through 14.
The second round begins at 8:30 a.m. and the professional championship field will be cut to the low 28 scores and ties for Wednesday’s final round.
