Both players shot 3-under par 68 to lead the 128 player field.
Snyder blitzed the front nine with a 4-under par 31, but made two bogeys against a lone birdie on the back nine.
Sam also made four front-nine birdies, but a bogey at the eighth gave him a turn score of 32. He made a bogey and birdie on the back side.
A shot behind the leaders is another Youngstown State golfer and past NEO Am champ Justin Atkinson of Brookfield.
Canton’s Daniel Mosher sits in solo fourth, the only other player under par with an opening 70 — making 17 pars and a birdie at the reachable par-3 12th to do so.
Cooper Taylor, the reigning NEO Am champ Nolan Haynes of Barberton, and Stow’s David Trier, the reigning Senior Summit County Amateur champ, all shot even par 71 and sit at T5.
Three skins were won on the day, including a rare birdie skin. Tommy Miano made eagle-3 on the par-5 fifth, Mike Butler made birdie-2 on the par-3 on sixth, and Brian Myers made eagle on on the par-4 14th. Skins were worth $575 each
