It took a hole-out eagle from the fairway to secure a victory at Catawba Island Club in the 2022 NOGA 4-Player Shamble.
The format for this event is unique: team scoring is based on two net better balls on each hole, played off 50% of each competitor’s full USGA handicap. On each hole, all players hit from the same tee, the best tee shot is selected, then all team members play out their own ball from that best tee shot until holed.
The Fox Den Golf Course team of Matthew Frey, Ryan Stefanksi, Justin Trzebuckowski and Jimmy Wild shot an incredible 22-under par to win the tournament.
Even more incredible, based on their individual handicaps of scratch or better, as a group they had to give two shots back to the field! Every player on the Fox Den team shot a gross score of 69 or better, led by Stefanski who shot a 63 and Wild who shot a 64.
The difference in victory: Wild dunked his second shot from the fairway for eagle on the 17th hole, and that stroke proved to be the winner.
The Toledo area team of Tyson Spence, Joshua Adams, Louis Fahrbach and Erick Scharer finished in second place at 21-under par. They had a dream start to their day, going 4-under par through the first hole after a drive to four feet allowed them to make three eagles on the opening hole. All four members of that team shot a gross score of 70 or better, as their entire team of scratch players received only one net stroke overall.
