NOPGA Dominates Singles Play to Win Third Consecutive Junior Ohio Cup 17-7
The youngsters representing the Northern Ohio Section of the PGA dominated the 16 Singles Matches and went on to win the Junior Ohio Cup for the third consecutive season with a 17-7 victory over the Southern Ohio Section in a rain-shortened event on Sunday at Brookside Country Club.
Because tournament officials anticipated the inclement weather it was determined late Saturday that the Singles Matches would be contested over nine holes rather than the customary 18.
It mattered little to the NOPGA as it won nine of the 16 matches with three losses and four ties to remain undefeated in the event, which will return to a SOPGA course next year.
Seven members won both their matches, adding Singles victories to the Fourball victories on Saturday. As they did on Saturday the girls led the NOPGA as Julia Gulla (Sagamore Hills), Kayla Knaze (Fairview Park), Annelise Stencel (Akron), Elena Varga (Hudson) and Korrine Knaze (Fairview Park) went 2-0.
Dexter James (Hudson) and Dominic Castelluccio (Westlake) went 2-0 for the boys.
Annelise Stencel (Akron) and Dexter James (Hudson), are the most experienced players on the team with three appearances. Stencel finished the day as the most successful. A sophomore at Ithaca College, Stencel completed her Junior Cup career undefeated with six victories, no losses and no ties.
