Kirkpatrick, Vidovic win NOPGA Junior PGA Section Championship
Silas Kirkpatrick and Gracyn Vidovic took command over the final nine holes on Tuesday and went on to win Northern Ohio Professional Golfers Association Junior PGA Section Championship at a steamy Medina Country Club.
Kirkpatrick, from Clinton, came from two shots behind with a final-round 4-under 68 to win the boys division by three shots over Chagrin Falls’ Ethan White with a 36-hole total of 5-under par 139 (71-68).
Vidovic, from Aurora, shot a final round 73 for a two-day total of one-under 143 to win the girls division by three shots over Waite Hill’s Dixon Hill, who went 70-76=146.
All four players earned a trip to the Junior PGA Championship at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex at Purdue University at the end of July.
Kirkpatrick, who will be a senior at Green and has committed to Cedarville College, began the final nine tied with White, made just one bogey during his round when he three-putted the 365-yard 10th hole. He wiped that out in a hurry with an eagle on the 540-yard 12th, putting him at 4-under for the tournament. He added his third birdie on the final hole.
White, Avon’s Kyle Malicki and Westlake’s Patrick Myers, teammates at St. Ignatius, held down the first three spots after the first round but couldn’t overcome Kirkpatrick’s steady play that produced a pair of 34s.
Vidovic, who will be a freshman at Ashland University, began the day tied with Waite Hill’s Dixon Hill at 2-under par, but stayed under par at the turn while Hill and Solon’s Serena Wu fell back. Vidovic made the turn at one-under for the tournament and promptly took the lead with birdies on the 10th and 12th holes. She followed with five consecutive pars before hitting her lone poor shot off the tee on the closing hole. Her drive ended up in some tall, wispy grass on the right side and she was forced to take a penalty shot which led to a double-bogey. By that time she had a five-shot lead and the double caused no harm.
