The Northern Ohio PGA is hosting their Kenny Novak Memorial Memorial Championship on Monday and Tuesday at Barrington Golf Club.
Akron’s Ryan Dinan, who is about to begin his second season as a collegiate player at Cleveland State, got off to a great start in the final event of his junior career.
Dinan shot an opening two-under 70 on a hot and humid Monday to take a two-shot lead after the first round of the 42d annual Northern Ohio PGA Junior Tour Championship – also known as the Kenny Novak Memorial — at Barrington Golf Club.
Dinan, 19, had nines of 34-36 for the day’s only sub-par round from the 133 entrants to lead the 16-19 age group. Play resumes Tuesday at 8 a.m.
Ashland’s Reed Emmons (36-36) is alone in second place at even-par and four players – North Canton’s Danny Gambone (38-35), Westlake’s Peter Wolf (37-36), Youngstown’s Nathan Miller (38-35) and Canfield’s Mick Ambrose (39-34) – are tied for third place at one-over 73.
Two others are four shots back and four more are five back.
Dinan, son of PGA member David Dinan, and Wolf led the field with four birdies in the oldest age group.
In the remaining age groups:
GIRLS 16-19: Brunswick’s Ellie Gonzalez-Ribble and Fairview Park’s Kayla Knaze each shot 38-33=71 to share the lead, two shots in front of Hudson’s Elena Varga (35-38) and Sagamore Hills’ Julia Gulla (36-37). Knaze, the leading points leader heading into the tournament, has won seven events in 13 starts this season. Gonzalez-Ribble has two wins and six top-10 finishes in six events.
BOYS 14-15: East Liverpool’s Elijah Stewart, who won the 11-13 age group in 2024 when the tournament was held at Club Walden, shares the first-round lead with Medina’s Declan West when both shot 2-over 74’s. Medina’s Trent Reidel (36-40) is alone in second place at 4-over 76 and Madison’s Jacobb Duaso (38-40) is fourth at 6-over 78. While Stewart was consistent with nines of 37-37 West’s one-under 35 on the back nine – to go with an opening 39 — was the lowest nine-hole score of the day. Both had three birdies on the back nine.
BOYS 11-13: Rocky River’s Coleson Paez, the son of PGA member Nick Paez, has a commanding lead in the age group points list, and has a 3-shot lead after splits of 36-38=74. Uniontown’s Blake Wolchalk (37-40=77) stands second and Pepper Pike’s Aidon Tong (41-40=81) is third.
GIRLS 11-15: Strongsville’s Vivian Eich (37-38) and Fairview Park’s Korrine Knaze (39-36) each shot 3-over 75 and have a two-shot lead over Chesterland’s Anna Phillips (36-42). Knaze leads the 11-15 points list and Eich stands fifth.
