Three-time champion Jim Troy shot an opening 6-under 66 on Monday and stands alone in first place after the first round of the 76th annual Northern Ohio Professional Golfers Association’s Professional Championship at Tippecanoe Country Club.
Troy, a teaching professional at The Golf Dome and a four-time NOPGA Player-of-the-Year, will take a one-shot lead into Tuesday’s second round of the 54-hole tournament considered as one of the Section’s majors, also known as the NOPGA Section Championship.
Troy, 45, has been the Section’s most consistent winner of this event since Pepper Pike Head Professional Rob Moss won five straight titles starting in 2010. Troy won in 2021, 2022 and 2024 and was the runnerup to Jaysen Hansen last year.
Troy, a resident of Strongsville, had nines of 33-33 on Monday, one shot better than former NOPGA Associate Player-of-the-Year Michael Balcar, an assistant at Brandywine Country Club. Balcar used two spurts of making back-to-back birdies en route to a 33-34=67 in his first Section Championship appearance.
Jared Toom, an instructor at GolfTEC-Stonebrook, was one of three players at 2-under 70 after going 39-31 with an eagle on the 436-yard 17th. He joined Belmont Country Club Director of Instruction and 2019 champion Mike Stone (36-34).
Round one was delayed one hour and twenty minutes due to dangerous weather. Round 2 begins Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
