There were 50 junior golfers ages 8 to 19 teeing off in the 13th Matt Mishler Junior Portage County Amateur on Monday at Windmill Lakes Golf Club, with outstanding scores fired despite the gusting wind.
Leader in the clubhouse in the boys 16 to 19 age division was Dylan Dunn of Stow. The senior this year for the Stow Bulldogs fired the low score overall for the entire tournament, a five-over-par 75.
In the championship division behind Dunn is Jackson Choi of Hudson (81) and Cory Gasaway of Mogadore (82).
Leading the girls 16 to 19 age division is already a champion of the Matt Mishler Junior.
Maren Seaholts of Kent carded an 86 to take charge of the oldest girls age division with Sydnie Leavery of Kent (92) and Isabella Mineo of Kent (96) rounding out the top three.
The boys 13 to 15 age division saw golfers from Portage County in a sweep of the top three.
Ian Pendergast of Mogadore shot tied the overall low score of the event, a 75, to land at the top of the division. Liam Curtis of Kent is a closer runner-up, carding a 79 with Cole Hostetler of Rootstown adding an 83.
Abigail Retherford of Ravenna, also a former champion of the Junior Amateur, shot an 85 on Monday to best Ashlyn Leavery of Kent by six strokes for the current lead. Third place is Maddie Kost firing a 94.
Finally in the boys 12 and under, James Morgan of North Benton holed out with a 40 and his sister, Samantha, took the lead in the girls 12 and under, scoring a 56.
Tee times begin at 7 a.m. at Sunny Hill Golf Course in Brimfield today as juniors vie for trophies and gift certificates on their way to the championship.
