Brooklyn Millard of Aurora scored low on her way to the lead in the Girls 16-to-19 age division at the 14th Matt Mishler Portage County Junior Amateur.
Junior golfers, playing the first round at Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna before heading to Sunny Hill Golf Course in Brimfield on Tuesday, played on an outstanding day when it didn’t rain and Windmill Lakes staff had worked hard to make sure the course was in great condition for the tournament.
Millard set the pace with a one-over-par 71. The player of the year in the Suburban League American Division as a freshman and the recognized as the best of the Record-Courier Best of Preps for the 2020 season, Millard had an outstanding round, leading the 16-to-19 division girls by more than a dozen strokes over Maren Seaholts of Kent (83) and Abigail Retherford, Ravenna (84).
Both Seaholts and Retherford were Record-Courier Best of Preps so the final pairing in the girls oldest age division will be hotly contested.
In the boys 16-to-19 age division, James Fliss (81) and David Berry (83), both from Hudson, lead the tournament and are in the final pairing with Nathan Ryan of Akron (84). A pair of Rootstown Rover golfers, Mason Bartholomy (84) and Cole Hostetler (85) are looking to move up the leaderboard on the final day.
While Millard was having an outstanding day, Matt Fiedler of Stow was enjoying success on the course, firing a two-over-par 72.
Fiedler will try to hold on to his five-stroke lead over Liam Curtis, also of Stow (77). Both Rowan Baynes of Kent and James Morgan of North Benton fired 80s to tie for third place.
Madolyn Kost of Kent leads the Girls 13 to 15 age division carding a five-over-par 75. Southeast Lady Pirate, Gracie Westover and Kent’s Ashlyn Leavery each tallied 95s to tee-off in the final pairing with Kost.
Samantha Morgan of North Benton (54) and Jennifer Mix of Diamond (58) will battle it out for the Girls 12 and under division. Dakota Powers of Mantua leads the Boys 12 and under, scoring a 50. All golfer in the 12 and under division will complete their tournament on holes 19-27 at Sunny Hill Golf Course Tuesday.
