Dover’s Ryan Troyer Shoots Stunning 63 to Take 54-Hole Lead in the 105th Pyramid Treating Ohio Open Championship
Dover professional Ryan Troyer stunned the field with a second-round 7-under 63 on Tuesday and will take a three-shot lead into Wednesday’s final round of the 105th Ohio Open Championship at Firestone Country Club.
Troyer, a golf pro turned insurance salesman, shot his 63 on the Fazio Course and paired with his opening 66 on Monday on the North Course; his 36-hole total of 13-under 129 lifted him past first-round leader Jake Scott, Ohio State sophomore Finley Bartlett and Wright State senior Shane Ochs, who are tied at 10-under.
Strongsville’s Nick Piesen, a junior at Indiana University, and Stow’s Jack Vojtko, a junior at Ohio State, share third place at 8-under with seven players tied at 7-under and another six tied at 6-under.
The final round begins at 7:50 a.m. on the North Course with the leaders scheduled for 9:30.
Troyer, 32, began the second round as one of seven players tied at 4-under after his 66 on the North Course. He bogeyed the first hole, then went another 127 holes bogey-free and punctuated his round with eagles on the Fazio’s 492-yard 13th hole and the 525-yard 17th.
Scott, a touring pro on the Korn Ferry and PGA Americas Tours, followed his record-setting opening round of 10-under 60 on the Fazio Course with a second-round par-72 on the North to remain at 10-under. The Strongsville native has never won the Ohio Open but has had several close calls.
Piesen, another Strongsville resident, added a second-round 65 on the Fazio Course to an opening 69, and Vojtko, a fourth-place finisher in this event in 2023, also stood at 134, but his rounds were 65-69.
Bartlett, a two-time state champion and three-year all-Ohioan, shot a second straight 66 to get to 10-under, and Ochs shot the tournament’s second-lowest round of 7-under 63 to also reach 10-under.
