Brandywine Country Club Assistant Professional Michael Balcar shot a second-round 4-under 68 and will take a five-shot lead into the final round of the 76th Northern Ohio PGA Professional Championship at Tippecanoe Country Club.
Balcar, the reigning Section Associate Player-of-the-Year, was the best player in the field throughout the day that started with a three-hour weather delay.
His two-day total of 9-under 135 (67-68) is five shots better than three-time champion and first-round leader Jim Troy (66-74=140), with four players sitting at one-under 143.
The field was cut to the low 29 scores and ties at 8-over par.
Balcar, 33, began the day one stroke behind Troy but pulled into a tie with a par to Troy’s bogey on the first hole. The two men took turns leading the tournament for most of the day until Balcar took the lead for good at 6-under through seven holes.
Balcar, making his Professional Championship debut after obtaining his PGA membership weeks ago, played his final 12 holes in four under while Troy made eight pars and one birdie in the same stretch.
The final round is scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday under the threat of inclement weather.
