Michael Porter started his quest for a rare title defense in Greatest Golfer on Tuesday at the ‘Joe’ Dickey Electric qualifier event at Bedford Trails.
Porter, the 2020 champ, squared off against Blake Hood of Alliance, and both posted 76s to lead the Joseph Nohra Insurance Boys u17 division. Hood already qualified last week at the Dickey Pine Lakes qualifier.
Nathan Kelly of East Liverpool scored a 78 to take third place.
Mooney grad Jayne Bernard won top honors in the Girls u17 Magnolias on the Green division. She posted a 78 — fighting off a lost ball in the woods on the last hole. She went up-and-down from her drop area — draining a 30-foot putt to close the door on Jackie Kinnick of Canfield — who shot an 80. Kaitlyn Hoover of Wilmington Area High School was third with an 82.
Braeden Sallee came in second place in the Ron Kreps Drywall Boys u14 division — but posted the best feat of the day. He aced the No. 8 hole with a 9-iron from 110 yards.
Witnessing it was the u14 champ of the day — Chase Zelesnak, who posted a 90.
In Ambrose Family Eye Center Girls u14, Sophia Rivera’s 98 earned her top honors. Gianna Ross shot a 107 for 2nd place.
