The 2025 U.S. Open Local Qualifier at Weymouth Country Club in Medina today featured a competitive field of talented players, including 44 professionals. However, weather conditions posed significant challenges. Windy conditions tested the players’ skill in both the morning and afternoon waves. Additionally, a rain delay interrupted play in the mid-afternoon.
Jonathan Oakes, an amateur from Michigan, needed the wind to cool him off early in the day, as he would birdie three of his first four holes on his way to front nine 33. He would not give up the lead the rest of the day, adding two more birdies on his back nine to secure the medalist position.
Nick Carlson, a professional and University of Michigan graduate, was the only other player under par today. Carlson ended up with one more birdie on the card than Oakes, finishing with six birdies on the afternoon. Carlson will look to continue an impressive stretch of Qualifying golf after securing a spot on the European Challenge Tour for his performance at Europe’s Q-School.
Also qualifying: Andrew Bailey, a former Northeast Ohio Amateur Champion; professional Jake Kneen, Head Golf Coach of Oakland University; Liam Curtis, a 2025 Kent State Golf commit and son of 2003 Open Championship winner Ben Curtis; and Tyler Sabo, a member of the Ohio State Men’s Golf Team. All four players tied with an even-par 72, neatly avoiding a playoff by capturing the final four qualifying spots.
Kneen and Carlson were the only two of forty-four professionals competing to qualify from Weymouth.
There were six players tied at 1-over par 73 that would battle in a sudden death playoff to earn one of two alternate spots. C.M. Mixon secured the first alternate spot, while Tom Nettles took the second.
