OBERLIN: Jack Mast used a torrid final seven holes and Kayla Knaze used a stream of steady, near flawless play over her last 15 holes to win titles in the 43rd annual Kenny Novak Junior Tour Championship on Tuesday at Oberlin Golf Club.
Mast, of Millersburg, played his final seven holes in 5-under to shoot a final-round 7-under 65 to win the boys division with a 36-hole score of 7-under 137. He won by three shots.
Knaze, of Fairview Park, went bogey-free over a 12-hole stretch to shoot 73 and win the girls division by two shots with a two-day total of even-par 144. After being two shots over after three holes she birdied two holes on the front and parred eight of nine holes on the back.
First-round leader Ray Koeberle, of Wadsworth, finished as the runnerup with an even-par 72 and a total score of 4-under 140 and Westlake’s Jackson Sommer’s 68 – the day’s second lowest 18 – lifted him to third place.
Stow’s Sarah Vojtko posted a second-straight one-over 73 to finish as the runnerup behind Knaze and Gianna Reginelli, of Broadview Heights, used the lowest round of the tournament – a 2-under 70 – to finish in a tie for third with Korrine Knaze, both at 149.
Mast, who will be attending St. Leo University in St. Leo, Fla. after leading Highland High to a third-place finish in last fall’s state tournament, had nines of 33-32 with six birdies, an eagle and one bogey to remain perfect in the Northern Ohio PGA Junior Tour season. He entered three events and won them all.
Knaze had a similar run, winning five of the seven events she entered this season and winning for the first time after finishing third, second and fourth in three previous appearances.
This is the final event of the NOPGA Junior Tour’s regular season and the results helped determine the NOPGA’s team for the fourth Junior Ohio Cup to be played in October at the Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club in Powell. The teams, based on a player’s standing on The Golf Dome Points List will be announced later this week.
