Saturday marked the start of the 96th Northeast Ohio Amateur Championship as well as the 5th Northeast Ohio Women’s Amateur Championship hosted at Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna.
The Championship Division hit the ground running with Strongsville native and current Indiana University student, Nick Piesen and Findlay University’s Myles Murphy, both posting a 2-under 68 to get the weekend started.
Joseph Gonzalez from Millersburg currently holds a one-shot lead in the Mid-Amateur Division, firing a score of even-par.
A tight race in the Senior Division left both Dave Antill of Dublin and Peter Betzold of West Chester atop the leaderboard. Both players finished even-par and are ready to carry the momentum into day two.
The Super Senior Division is led by Cleveland native, Ray McNiece. McNiece finished the day with a 4-over, 74 and had 3 birdies highlighting his round.
After day 1, the Women’s Division has proved to be competitive with Ashland University’s Gracyn Vidovic and Kent State’s Kristen Belden both shooting 1-over, 71s to top the leaderboard going into Sunday.
