Under the blazing sun this past Monday, 50 of the region’s talented young golfers gathered at the historic Mill Creek Golf Course in Boardman for the Joe Dickey Electric / Banner Supply junior tournament.
Four divisions took on the challenging South Course.
In the U17 Boys division, sponsored by Coaches Burger Bar, Tyler Guerrieri of Cardinal Mooney High School took home the top prize with a round of 73. Despite a slow start featuring three-putts on three early holes, Guerrieri recovered brilliantly by “pouring in” three birdies. His performance was highlighted by a clutch long putt on the 15th and a spectacular iron shot on the 10th that landed within three feet of the cup. Finishing in a tie for second place with rounds of 75 were Milo Wright of Boardman and Zander Rowlett of Canfield.
The U17 Girls division, sponsored by Links at Firestone, was won by Olivia Norris of Lakeview, who finished with a 77. Norris credited her straight driving for her success, particularly on the par-four 12th hole where she carded a birdie. Taking second place was Maddie Jackson of Columbiana with a 79, while McKenzie Ash of Beaver Creek claimed third with a score of 93.
The U14 Boys division, sponsored by Morrone Mechanical, saw Carter Altobelli of Warren JFK emerge as the winner with an 80. The ninth-grader started strong, hitting nearly every green in regulation on the front nine. Even as the heat began to take a toll on his back nine, a pivotal 30-foot par save helped him maintain his lead and secure the victory. Tristan Parker of Girard took second with an 82, followed by Landon Maxwell of New Wilmington in third with a 90.
In the U14 Girls division, sponsored by Brilex Group, Katelyn Plummer of Butler posted a winning 79. The standout moment of her round was a remarkable seven-iron from 132 yards that nearly resulted in a hole-in-one, coming to rest just an inch from the cup. Olivia Kempe of St. Charles followed in second place with a score of 98.
The competition was held at a venue steeped in golf history. Mill Creek is one of the rare locations in the United States to boast two courses designed by the legendary Donald Ross. The North Course opened in 1928, and the South Course, where Monday’s tournament took place, was completed in 1932. Ross, a prolific architect who designed over 400 courses, was known for his strategic use of hazards. He famously remarked, “There is no such thing as a misplaced bunker. Regardless of where a bunker may be, it is the business of the player to avoid it.” This philosophy is evident at Mill Creek, which features more than 100 bunkers and a South Course layout that traverses the rolling, hilly landscape of eastern Ohio.
The junior golf series continues with two upcoming events: Salem Hills Shotgun on Thursday, June 11, and Old Avalon Classic on Thursday, June 18.
