The Ohio Girls Golf Foundation celebrated its 25th annual Girls Golf Showcase at Avon Oaks Country Club in Avon, Ohio. The showcase marks the beginning of the high school golf season for many of the participating teams. For some players, it’s also their first opportunity to compete alongside their high school teammates and begin building relationships that will last throughout their high school career and beyond.
This year’s showcase featured 14 teams and 17 individual competitors, with a total of 76 players competing in this milestone event. Participating schools that brought a team included Avon, Avon Lake, Beaumont, Edison, Keystone, Lake Catholic, Mapleton, Notre Dame, Padua Franciscan, Saint Joseph Academy, Shaker Heights, Southern Local, Southeast High School, and Ursuline.
To begin the day, all competitors participated in a series of interactive clinics. Players rotated through two different sessions, each lasting 45 minutes. The first rotation focused on the short game and driving range, while the second emphasized on-course management.
While on the course, players had the privilege of hearing from Barb Mucha and Janice Moodie, who shared their experiences and knowledge of the game. Marianne Reece and Joe Pianecki also provided valuable instruction on the Rules of Golf. In addition, players heard from Tom Rider, the retired head coach at Warren JFK, who was instrumental in helping the Ohio Girls Golf Foundation keep the showcase alive and thriving during its early years.
Following the clinics, the tournament commenced. Southeast High School led the team standings with a score of 345. The championship team consisted of Kristen Dillon, Lily Hayes, Jennifer Mix, Samantha Morgan, and Emily Morrison.
In the individual competition, Sophia Goheen of Western Reserve Academy fired a 68 to capture the Ohio Girls Golf Showcase individual title. Samantha Morgan of Southeast High School finished runner-up after carding a 70, while Natalie Barnes of Nordonia High School placed third with a 75.
This year also marked the introduction of the Rising Stars Division, giving newer golfers an opportunity to compete from the junior tees in the showcase. Avery Thurston from Edison High School claimed the Division title after carding an 88.
Following the round, players, coaches, and families gathered for dinner, the scholarship presentation, and the awards ceremony.
One of the highlights of the day was the Ohio Girls Golf Foundation Scholarship Presentation. This year, the foundation received 43 scholarship applications and awarded 17 scholarships to graduating seniors.
Natalie Barnes of Nordonia High School received the Lynne Plaisance Scholarship and will continue her academic and golf career at Mercyhurst University this fall.
When asked how receiving the scholarship will help her in the future, Barnes said, “This scholarship will help me afford my tuition at Mercyhurst University, which is the school that I know I can thrive at.”
Abigail Kate Owens of Avon High School was also selected as a scholarship recipient. Owens will attend The Ohio State University this fall.
“It gives me a sense of accomplishment from everything I did throughout my high school career,” Owens said. “It shows me that I accomplished a lot, and it makes me feel good.”
Jillian Peters of Perry High School received the Mary Ann Bierman Scholarship and will attend the University of Mount Union this fall.
“This scholarship will help me pursue my plans for my future,” Peters said.
Shyla Piezia of Marion L. Steele High School was also awarded a scholarship and will attend Bowling Green State University.
“This scholarship will help me financially and educationally,” Piezia said. “It will help pay for my tuition while allowing me to focus on my education and pursue my dream of a career in marketing.”
Tessa Ross of Boardman High School was selected as a scholarship recipient and will continue her education at Duquesne University.
“It means so much to me,” Ross said. “College is expensive, so not having to worry as much about the financial burden means everything. The fact that this scholarship is connected to golf, which has been such an important part of my life, makes it even more special.”
Angela Kerwood of Lake Catholic High School received the Teen Burke Scholarship and will attend King University.
“This scholarship will help me pursue my medical degree so I can help others who are in a similar situation as I was with a neurological disorder,” Kerwood said.
Abbigail Roy of Berea-Midpark High School received the Patty Wood Memorial Scholarship and will attend Miami University.
“This scholarship will help take some of the burden off my college tuition,” Roy said.
Isabel Stockmaster of Seneca East High School also received a scholarship and will attend The Ohio State University.
“This scholarship will help pay for part of my tuition at Ohio State,” Stockmaster said. “Golf has played such an important role in my high school career, and I’m extremely grateful to receive this scholarship.”
Allie Miller of Highland High School received the Arrowsmith/Keim Scholarship and will attend Malone University.
“This scholarship will help me continue my education and earn my college degree,” Miller said.
Ella Zampedro of Lake Catholic High School received the GCGA Scholarship and will attend Baldwin Wallace University.
“This scholarship will help me complete my degree in Psychology, attend the police academy, and become a police officer,” Zampedro said.
Additional scholarship recipients included Natalie Sawicki (Canfield), Leah DiFranco (Midview), Evvian Briner (Fort Recovery), Evelyn Dehus (Milton-Union), Olivia Knapke (Fort Recovery), Elsie Mello (Archbold), and Riley Woodford (Bristol), who will continue their academic and athletic journeys at colleges across Ohio and beyond.
Now in its 25th year, the Ohio Girls Golf Showcase continues to showcase outstanding talent while educating, supporting, and growing the game of golf. More than just a tournament, the showcase provides young women with opportunities to learn, compete, earn scholarships, and build lifelong friendships.
As another successful year came to a close at Avon Oaks Country Club, the event once again highlighted the bright future of girls’ golf in Ohio.
