It was the perfect day for kids to play golf on Sunday afternoon, and more than 30 youths did exactly that at Sunny Hill Golf Course in Brimfield.
The 14th Portage County Kids Amateur teed off at 4 p.m. on the middle nine of the golf course with the oldest youths entering their freshman year this fall and the youngest in second grade.
Parents followed and cheered golf shots that sometimes traveled only 10 feet while other youths demonstrated the skills they have practiced throughout the summer, playing anywhere from four to nine holes depending on age. Grandparents followed in golf carts, parents walked around the course, and everyone forecaddied for their sons and daughters, most competing in their very first tournament.
Medals were awarded to the best score in each flight, and everyone received a certificate and an ice cream sandwich for their efforts.
Bryan Harvey, coach of the Kent Roosevelt varsity girls team, started everyone on the first hole as members of the Lady Riders helped the kids with rules and scorecards.
Some of the golfers would compete in the Portage County Junior Amateur played at Raccoon Hill Golf Course on Wednesday.
Others are already looking forward to playing in the Kids Amateur in 2027 as they gathered for a group picture following the event.
