Rain, wind and lightning pushed play into a second day for the 36 holes of U.S. Women’s Open Final Qualifying in Columbus, but that didn’t bother amateur Kary Hollenbaugh, who used her home course knowledge to earn medalist honors at New Albany Country Club.
Hollenbaugh made five birdies against a lone bogey in completing her sterling second round on Friday, finishing with a 36-hole total of 3-under par after posting 73 in the wind and rain on Thursday.
Hollenbaugh, a junior on the Ohio State Buckeyes Women’s Golf Team, felt a little extra pressure competing at her home course to earn a chance to play in her first major championship:
Canadian professional Anna Huang took the second qualifying spot after finishing two shots behind Hollenbaugh.
A playoff was required to determine the winner of the third qualifying spot. Pro Elina Sinz of Katy, TX held off Sylvania’s Elizabeth Win with a par on the third playoff hole, after both players had a chance to seal the deal on the second but missed short putts.
The three qualifying players head to the U.S. Women’s Open at Erin Hills in Wisconsin on May 29 – June 1.
